Each week on Randy Seaver’s Genea-musings blog he has a post for Saturday night Genealogy fun. Because of the time difference, I have called my series Sunday Afternoon Genealogy Fun. This week’s mission was:
1) What were the newspaper headlines the day one of your grandparents or great-grandparents were born?
2) Use any newspaper provider (Chronicling America (https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) is FREE) to find the headlines.
3) Tell us who your subject was, when and where they were born, and tell us three or four headlines on the front page of the newspaper for that date.
4) Share your finds on your own blog post, in a comment on this post, or on your Facebook page. Please provide a link to your work as a comment to this post.
Here’s mine:
My grandfather, Wilfred Palmer Marr, was born 19 December 1892 at Myrtleford, Victoria, Australia
Since I live in Australia, I chose Trove to find the headlines. The newspaper for Myrtleford isn’t online, so I chose The Age from Melbourne. Our newspapers were organized differently – the family notices and advertising were on the first three pages, which made finding the headlines harder. They were on page 5.
The headlines were:

* THE FINANCIAL SCANDALS
The Mercantile Bank Case
English Impatience of Delay
* THE PANAMA CANAL SCANDAL
Three Directors Arrested

* THE ENGLISH MAIL
The Ballaarat at Albany
