Once I’ve worked my way through birth, death and marriage certificates or indexes, family notices and cemeteries, the next set of records that can provide birth and death information are military records.
There are four main websites I use to find military records in Australia.
National Archives of Australia
The National Archives has the World War 1 and World War 2 service records. The World War 1 records are available to view online, and many of the World War 2 records are also available to view. The National Archives doesn’t just hold military records – it holds naturalization records, immigration records, and many other different type of records.
This site is mostly for World War Two records, but I find this useful to find more details about a person’s service if their record isn’t available on the National Archives website.
The Australian War Memorial has the First World War Nominal Roll and Embarkation Rolls, and also the among their other records are the Honours and Awards Rolls. These collections can provide additional information about the person, particularly about any honours and awards they received.
Commonwealth War Graves Commission
This site provides details about those who died in the two world wars, as well as information about the cemeteries and memorials they were buried or memorialised in. It covers not just Australia but all countries in the British Commonwealth, including New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom.
