Thursday’s Tips – Australia Cemetery Index, 1808-2007

My 2x great grandfather, George Oliver, died in 1930 and was buried in Bairnsdale Cemetery.  The only free online records I have found for Bairnsdale Cemetery are on the Australian Cemeteries Index and Gravestone Photographic Resources.  Find a Grave and BillionGraves also have memorials from Bairnsdale Cemetery. I wasn’t able to find George on any of them.  FindMyPast also has a collection, Victoria Burials & Memorials, which includes records from Bairnsdale Cemetery, but there was no entry for him there either.

I was only able to find him in Ancestry.com’s collection Australia Cemetery Index, 1808-2007.

Although I wasn’t able to find a list of cemeteries for Victoria listed (only Bairnsdale is mentioned) in “About the Australia Cemetery Index, 1808-2007”, I was able to find information about the collection on the page Current cemeteries and crematoria in Victoria, from the National Library of Australia website. In the section headed Cemetery Transcription Index, it states it is included in the Australia Cemetery Index, 1808-2007 on Ancestry.  The page also provides a list of cemeteries included in the Index.

The collection on Ancestry also includes cemeteries from New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania. A list of cemeteries from these states is included in “About the Australia Cemetery Index, 1808-2007”.
