The ancestor in my tree with this surname was Margaret Nicol.

The record with the most information about Margaret was the 1841 Scotland Census. This census record shows the family were living at North Tag Street, Dundee:
David Richardson, age 35, baker j, not born in county
Margret Richardson, age 50, not born in county
Martha Richardson, age 15, PLW linen, not born in county
Margaret Richardson, age 13, linen f spinner, not born in county.

I haven’t been able to find a baptism record for the daughter Margaret Richardson, or a marriage record for David and Margaret. The only record I have found is the baptism of Martha, in 1827 in Cupar, Fife. The surname was written on the baptism record as Ritchardson.

I have found a burial record for Margaret Nicol, which shows:
Date of interment 1846 Feby 2, Margaret Nicoll Wife of David Richardson, Baker, died Jany 30, age 56 years, birthplace Dundee, cause of death water in head, residence Rennie Close, Aithengate(?). Place of interment New 1353 C

Based on the 1841 census, she was born between 1786 and 1796. Based on her age at the time of death, she was born about 1790.

The burial record lists her birthplace as Dundee, Angus, but her daughter Martha was born in Cupar, Fife. Without being certain about when and where she was born, there are too many baptisms to know which one is for our Margaret. Even narrowing her birth year to 1790, and the birthplace to Fifeshire, there are still a number of possibilities. I have therefore not been able to trace the Nicol family any further back at this time.
